Find DLL Files with DLL Search

All DLLs (Dynamic Linked or Loaded Library) are not created equal. As the name implies, these files are dynamically loaded and are associated with an executable program or even other DLL files at run-time. What does this mean for you? Essentially, DLL files are basic resource files that are shared between all kinds of different programs. They are passed around and used as necessary, and might be employed by with dozens of different programs. Run.dll, for example, is a key file with many different software applications. Although many Microsoft DLL files are actually necessary and beneficial, others, known as malware DLLs, can cause damage to your system and threaten your security and privacy.

The average PC user rarely even hears about DLLs – unless something goes wrong. But these little files are a vital part of your system, and they are used in everything from sending an email to running high-end games. The most common DLL error messages often relate to missing DLLs which an active program is trying to use. In this case, just one application or process is trying to call on a certain missing DLL. You might not even know which program is trying to do it!

These DLLs can be lost for a number of reasons, including:

  • a program was uninstalled and took with it a DLL used by other programs
  • a program was installed on your PC which overwrote the DLL with an old or incompatible version
  • a corruption during installation or uninstallation caused the DLL to be removed or corrupted
  • Malware attacked and removed the DLL
  • A security program identified the DLL as dangerous, and removed it
  • a hardware problem caused physical corruption to data and the DLL

However, if you start seeing a DLL come up in error messages and warnings, you might not want to fix or replace it: the DLL itself could be part of an infection.

Like any program, malware often uses DLL files. But how can you know if a certain DLL file is safe or dangerous? The filename rarely gives a hint if the DLL is part of Microsoft DLL files or a serious computer infection. That's where DLL search comes into play. Check out our labs to find DLL files, obtain descriptions and functionality of the various DLLs and to confirm whether or not a specific DLL is a legitimate file.

Informative and practical, our DLL Labs can provide you with the information you need to find DLL files, determine what DLLs are on your system, how they function, whether they should be kept or removed, and how to do so. Visit our DLL Labs now and do a DLL search to begin understanding the DLLs that reside on your computer!
