Windows Process Description:

The module crack.dll is a dynamic link library that enables user mode application programs to run based on the CrackNT technology. CrackNT was created and copyrighted by Werner Zimmermann.

Aside from the file crack.dll, CrackNT consists of several other components such as the cracknt.sys, the crackins.bat, the crackstat.bat, the crackrem.bat, and the loaddrv.exe, the crack.lib and the crack.h, and the iomgr.exe.

While running application programs based on CrackNT, the file crack.dll is required to access input/output ports and physical memory addresses. It serves as the main interface between the user mode application programs and encapsulates calls to the kernel device driver called the cracknt.sys. The cracknt.sys file supports Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP operating systems and requires administrator privileges to be installed. After its installation, however, the program can be used by normal users.

CrackNT also contains batch files including the crackins.bat, the crackstat.bat, the crackrem.bat, and the loaddrv.exe files in order to install, check the status, and uninstall the kernel mode driver. In addition, a set of Visual C library known as the crack.lib which you must link to your own C files, and a header file called the crack.h which contains C definitions and function prototypes may be used to build your own user mode programs based on CrackNT.

A sample application, the IOmgr, comes bundled with the program crack.dll. It allows read or write I/O ports and physical memory from the command line. Further, I/O port address ranges can be unlocked so that existing applications such as DOS can have direct I/O port access without being recompiled.

The crack.dll program has not been tested with Windows Vista. Vista contains security mechanisms that may cause CrackNT to fail. There are other known issues that the crack.dll application does cause problems with multi-core CPUs like Pentium D or Core Duo. Windows may become unstable after the installation of the crack.dll file. It is recommended to turn off the second CPU core in the system BIOS before using the program.
