Windows Process Description:

In Microsoft Direct3D, the term "ramp" means a set of values that map the level of a particular color component (red, green, blue) for all pixels in the frame buffer to new levels that are received by the DAC for display. The remapping is performed by way of three look-up tables, one for each color component.

The d3dramp.dll module is part of Direct3D that uses monochromatic lighting calculations to speed up rendering. It computes lighting with a very simplified model. Ambient lighting and specular color are not additives. This DLL adds a directional light source to black faces due to missing ambient lighting and sets the specular color to the default value of 0 0 0 to completely brighten faces when lighted. It also specifies specular color, e.g. 0.9 0.9 0.9, for incorrect specular color, and uses unlit textures appearance for insufficient display quality of lighted texture.

The Direct3D takes a pixel from the frame buffer and evaluates its individual red, green and blue color components. Each component is represented by a value from 0 to 65535. Direct3D takes the original value and uses it to index a 256-element array of the d3dramp.dll file in which each element contains a value that replaces the original one. Direct3D performs this look-up and replaces process for each color component of each pixel in the frame buffer, thereby changing the final colors for all the on-screen pixels.

The file d3dramp.dll is used by Windows to render 3-D and 2-D graphics in applications such as games where performance is important. It also allows applications to run full screen instead of being embedded in a window, though the user can still run it in a window if he/she chooses. Microsoft Direct3D uses hardware acceleration when it is available in the graphics card.

It also allows perspective-correct texture mapping, z-buffering, alpha blending, anti-aliasing, atmospheric effects and mipmapping. With its integration with DirectX technology, it offers video mapping, hardware 3-D rendering in 2-D overlay planes, and even sprites, providing the use of 2-D and 3-D graphics in interactive media titles.
