Windows Process Description:
Microsoft Mail Configuration Library is home to gapi32.dll program supporting functions for Microsoft Mail protocols. The module gapi32.dll is part of the simple Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) basically tasked to provide extensions for MAPI that enables programmers to add basic messaging functionality to Windows operating system.
Microsoft Windows plays host to MAPI as its messaging architect and a Component Object Model based API. MAPI enables client programs to become (e-mail) messaging-enabled, -aware, or -based by calling MAPI subsystem routines that interface with certain messaging servers. The proprietary protocol MAPI/ RPC that Microsoft Outlook uses to communicate with Microsoft Exchange is closely related to MAPI.
Simple MAPI for which the DLL gapi32.dll belongs is a subset of 12 functions which enable developers to add basic messaging functionality. The gapi32.dll program ships to Microsoft Windows as part of Outlook Express/Windows Mail several compatible MAPI extension programs.
The Extended MAPI client interface programming calls can also be made indirectly through the API client interface Simple MAPI. The gapi32.dll component courses through the Common Messaging Calls (CMC) API client interface, or by the object-based CDO Library interface. These methods are considered user-friendly and designed for uncomplicated messaging-enabled and -aware applications.
Microsoft is the originator of MAPI when the company founded its MS Mail team in 1987. However, it was not until the acquisition of Consumers Software Inc in 1991 when Network Courier obtained that it had a messaging product. Microsoft Engineers did a refurbishing to the program and marketed it as MS PC Mail (or Microsoft Mail for PC Networking).
The basic API to MS PC Mail was known as MAPI version 0 (or MAPI0). MAPI uses functions loosely based on the X.400 XAPIA standard. The protocol includes facilities to access message transports, message stores, and directories.
