Windows Process Description:
The dynamic link library gdi.dll for Graphical Device Interface is one of the subsystem standards, which enable applications to use graphics and formatted text on both the video and the printer.
The graphics device interface (GDI) provides functions and related structures that an application that can be used to generate graphical output for displays, printers, and other devices. This application does not access the graphics hardware directly but instead, the module gdi.dll interacts with the drivers that enabling to such applications. Therefore, using the provided functions, you can draw lines, curves, closed figures, paths, text, and bitmap images.
The color and style of the items you draw depends on the drawing objects that is, pens, brushes, and fonts that you create. You can use pens to draw lines and curves, brushes to fill the interiors of closed figures, and fonts to write text. Moreover, an application creates a device context (DC) by using device context functions. It is the device context, which is GDI-managed structure containing information about the device, such as its operating modes and current selections. The module gdi.dll returns a device context handle, which is used in subsequent calls to identify the device.
Using the handle, an application can retrieve information about the capabilities of the device, such as its technology type (display, printer, or other device) and the dimensions and resolution of the display surface. With the module gdi.dll, it allows low-cost printers to be built by printer manufacturers, because all the page composition is done in software application.
A graphics device interface (GDI) enabled printer is a print processor that uses software to do all the print processing instead of requiring the printer hardware to do it. It works by rendering an image to a bitmap on the host computer and then sending the bitmap to the printer. A Win printer uses the module gdi.dll to prepare the output, which is then passed to the printer driver for further processing and then only afterwards to the printer itself.
