Windows Process Description:

The USB technology allows you to easily connect peripheral devices such as digital cameras, scanners, or mice to your computer. It is designed to work with all sorts of devices, hot plugging, and Plug-and-Play.

The marvel of the USB architecture in Windows XP occurs at the Enhanced Host Controller driver, which is supported by mini-ports, that each implements a specific type of USB support. It allows for a new miniport called the usbehci.sys, which allows native support for specific USB Enhanced Host Controllers. A host controller-specific coinstaller implemented by the hccoin.dll module is also provided to synchronize interaction between the Enhanced Host Controller and the companion host controllers. The INF file is responsible for loading the usbehci.sys and the hccoin.dll module on a Windows XP system. The Windows 2000 driver stack for USB is different from Windows XP.

USB devices have always operated at 12 mbps for full speed devices and 1.5 mbps for devices with lower bandwidth. However, a new version of USB, the USB 2.0, with a data transfer rate of 480 mbps allows you to use the entire bandwidth that it provides and lets you use more of those devices at once. This is the reason why USB 2.0 earned the nickname Hi-Speed USB.

The hccoin.dll module is very necessary to the proper operation of the USB high speed. It helps in providing the Hi Speed USB backward-compatibility. This means that you will be able to use the new USB 2.0-compliant devices on computers with USB 2.0 capability.

To support USB 2.0 on Windows 2000, a parallel driver stack is needed which consists of the usbport.sys, the usbhub20.sys and the usbehci.sys. To ensure proper Windows Update installation in the Windows 2000 scenario, the hccoin.dll module is also provided. On Windows 9X or earlier, the USB 2.0 driver is not supported.
