Windows Process Description:

Microsoft Corporation has developed Language Packs to enable users to create and edit files in different languages, as well as customize menus and help based on the selected language.

The processes that enable multilingual users to use applications with ease of language are contained in the DLL lpk.dll. In Microsoft Office, the lpk.dll file deploys functions to allow users to create or edit documents using their chosen language. The language packs provided in this application address the needs of multilingual individuals to present their work in different languages. It also helps organizations to deploy office applications in environments where PCs are shared by multilingual users or are servicing customers in different countries.

The lpk.dll file provides the flexibility of switching the entire user experience, including menus and help. It also converts necessary proofing tools, such as spell checker, dictionary and thesaurus to 37 different languages.

In websites, it is the site administrator that chooses from the language pack. The lpk.dll application assigns each language in the language pack a language identifier (ID) to determine the language used to display text and interpret text that is put on the site or site collection. A good example of this is when a site administrator chooses to create a site in French. When this is done, the site's toolbars, navigation bars, lists and column headings all appear in French.

There are other functions that the lpk.dll file extends as a process file bundled in the Windows Server 2003 pack. Aside from using it to create, edit, and proof documents in multiple languages, it gets up-to-date help for the language chosen by user. It can access document templates from Office Online and can also implement a comprehensive set of tools for the multilingual information worker.

Language files are shipped with the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system. However, there are supplemental language files, such as the East Asian language and languages that use complex script or require right-to-left orientations (like Arabic) that have to be installed separately.
