Windows Process Description:

The mailnews.dll module is the Internet Mail and News module for the Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. Internet Mail and News is the ancestor of Outlook Express and was available with Microsoft Windows 95. The mailnews.dll module is in Microsoft Plus, an enhancement package for the previous Windows version.

The mailnews.dll file lets you use email or electronic mail to compose, send, store and receive messages on an electronic communication system. This is used over the Internet, which is based on SMTP or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or over an Intranet that uses Internet Protocols.

The mailnews.dll module also allows access to News Client; this application software reads articles in Usenet or also known as newsgroup. This may be directly read from the news server disk or through a Network News Transfer Protocol. There are various links of new clients that depends on the service that the user requires, whether it is mainly for discussion or for downloading some data.

Microsoft Internet Mail and News is a freeware and was released after Microsoft Internet Explorer was released. It was later renamed and changed to Outlook Express and is bundled with Internet Explorer 4.0. As Microsoft Internet Mail and News is an optional component, you can install this and make it your default email program.

Choosing it as your default email when prompted when you run the Set-up program does this. You can also start your Internet Explorer and choose Preferences in the Edit Menu. Select Protocol Helpers Under the Network Option. Choose Mailto, then 'Change' and then 'Choose Helper'. Under the dialog box for the Protocol Helper Editor, choose 'Internet Mail and News' and click it to open then choose 'Ok'.
