Windows Process Description:
The module odbc32gt.dll means Microsoft Data Access ODBC Generic Thunk in computing terminology. The module basically provides a generic thunking function to the ODBC Driver. Simply put, the odbc32gt.dll library does a mapping of machine data from 16-bit ODBC platform to 32-bit ODBC platform.
The odbc32gt.dll provides compatibility for old versions of ODBC dynamic link libraries to their newest released versions. The file forms part of the hordes of DLLs that ODBC is running on, but unique in its function being an able bridge 16-bit addresses to 32-bit ones.
Certain implementations of the ODBC relocatable code use the odbc32gt.dllmodule to call other library functions. The DLL odbc32gt.dll calls in the code jump to thunks in an ODBC jump table, the jump table is replaced by a DLL with short functions that loads the needed associated application. The odbc32gt.dll module enables the ODBC driver to connect to the appropriate point in an already-loaded library.
The odbc32gt.dll component provides a piece of code that is executed to provide an address. The component also finds usage in the Win 16/Win32 API, where thunking is needed to convert a 16 bit address into a 32 bit equivalent or vice versa. Similar thunking functions of the odbc32gt.dll file were allowed from OS/2 to Win32 code in the Windows NT OS/2 subsystem and in the Resource Kit for Windows NT versions up to Windows 2000.
As a generic thunk, the odbc32gt.dll application is used to translate calls from 32-bit code to 16-bit code, especially in MDAC programs. The 16- and 32-bit memory addresses work very differently; thus, an able thunking library such as the odbc32gt.dll is utilized in order to provide a harmonious working environment. To allow the two environments to communicate, the odbc32gt.dll provides some intermediate code used to translate memory addresses (pointers) between platforms.
