Windows Process Description:

The ODBC Driver Manager uses the odbcji32.dll file, among other files in the Desktop Database Driver Library, to process ODBC API calls and act as an SQL engine.

The odbcji32.dll implements functions of the Open Database Connectivity on top of the Microsoft Jet API. It implements two-tier drivers where instead of performing the process of parsing, validating, optimizing and executing the query, the Microsoft Jet is used. Despite its apparent correlation, no direct mapping exists between ODBC and Microsoft Jet functions. Several factors, including cursor models and SQL mapping, prevent a direct correlation of the functions. The database driver library resides between the Microsoft Jet Engine and the ODBC driver manager. When ODBC functions are called by an application, it can be directly handled by the Driver Manager and no longer passes the driver. Because of this, Microsoft Jet does not see some function calls given that it does not have a direct connection to the driver manager.

The ODBC driver and driver interpret and implement data access and manipulation at the data source level. Actual translation and execution of the data-source specific commands are implemented on the database driver library. The data source-specific commands that it implements are issued by the application program itself via the API, and should comply with the SAG (SQL Access Group) standard.

The ODBC desktop database driver today supports many popular desktop database products in the market. The software developer Borland has also integrated an ODBC 2.0-compliant "socket" to its database engine. Thus, other programs can now access dBase and Paradox data using the odbcji32.dll library. Moreover, several applications software vendors have provided ODBC drivers for their respective database products. Finally, the Microsoft ODBC desktop database drivers allow any user of an ODBC-enabled application to open, query and update a desktop database using the ODBC interface.

The odbcji32.dll file and other library files for the desktop database library are compatible with Microsoft Windows 95 and higher versions. It is also supported on Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000.
