Windows Process Description:

The Desktop Database Drivers are needed to execute the Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface on Windows. These drivers are contained in one driver file, the odbcjt32.dll module that the ODBC driver manager module uses.

The ODBC is an interface for C programming language used for accessing data by applications from a variety of database management systems. It is a low-level, high performance interface designed for relational data stores.

Microsoft as a Jet-based set of ODBC drivers designed the desktop database drivers used for ODBC. These are two-tier drivers, which mean it does not perform the process of parsing, validating, optimizing and executing the query. Microsoft Jet instead performs these tasks. As such, Microsoft Jet is an integral, inseparable part of the ODBC drivers and is shipped with the drivers.

Driver manager calls the DLL odbcjt32.dll, which contains the ODBC desktop database drivers, in six different ways. To determine which driver in odbcjt32.dll that driver manager uses, the DRIVERID flag in the registry entry for a data source is called. This flag is passed by an application in the connection string as included in a call to SQLDriverConnect.

The odbcjt32.dll file on top of the Microsoft Jet API implements ODBC functions. This is because direct mapping between ODBC and Microsoft Jet functions is not possible due to multiple factors, such as SQL mapping. Given that the Microsoft Jet does not have a direct connection to the driver manager, it does not see the function call. Hence, the driver manager directly handles all ODBC functions called by an application even as the ODBC driver resides between Jet engine and the driver manager.

The drivers contained in the odbcjt32.dll file support Microsoft Windows 95 or later, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. However, only 32-bit applications are supported on Windows 95 or later. Applications initialized on 16-bit and 32-bit platforms are supported on Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000.
