Windows Process Description:

The DLL owssvr.dll comes with two Microsoft applications: the Microsoft Office Server Extensions and Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions.

As a process library for the Microsoft FrontPage extension, the owssvr.dll file is essentially used to display the web pages correctly. This DLL contains the functionalities for the FrontPage server extension that support the administration and authoring of FrontPage Web sites. It gives the programmer efficient and easily manipulated tools to administer Internet sites, manage security and track site usage statistics. By calling on the owssvr.dll file, Web sites can be published from within FrontPage and, at the same time, can be edited directly on the server.

As part of the Microsoft Officer Server Extensions (OSE), the owssvr.dll file is necessary to support web discussions in a Web site. When a user opens a browser in a machine with Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer installed, the browser will call for the owssvr.dll file. This will happen if the user has enabled the "Discuss" toolbar in the browser options. The browser looks for the owsvr.dll file to check if the OSE is installed in the system and if it supports web discussions.

Interestingly, the owssvr.dll file also works as an ISAPI extension needed to implement SharePoint Team Services functionality. These functionalities make up the primary features of SharePoint, namely list creation, deletion, and authoring. It creates a virtual table that stores data and metadata and forms an abstraction on top of the database. With this, it allows the user to manage tabular data in a Web site environment. As part of the SharePoint module, the owssvr.dll file can be used directly from the browser. The user can utilize it programmatically through a client API. It is implemented whenever FrontPage interacts with the functionality of a team Web site.

While SharePoint and FrontPage are related applications, it shares the owssvr.dll file as core component. In SharePoint 2003, the owssvr.dll file serves as the backbone of the SharePoint function. This is because the owssvr.dll file is the module that runs the mechanism for 'export to spreadsheet and open with access' options on the list Actions menu of SharePoint.
