Windows Process Description:

The module pscript5.dll is the postscript engine for printers used in Microsoft 2000, Microsoft XP Home Edition, Windows Server 2003, and other x64 and x86 operating systems.

The pscript5.dll file is essentially the printer device driver used to allow application data to be converted into a format that a print device reads to create a printed page. Microsoft Corporation developed the DLL pscript5.dll as an advanced user-mode driver. With this, the system is more protected from errors generated by the printer because the pscript5.dll file is capable of restricting the effect of an error within the spooler. This way, whenever printer errors occur, the user only needs to restart the spooler rather than reboot the entire system. Automatic recovery of the spooler service can be initialized within the service control manager of Windows Server 2003.

The pscript.dll file efficiently works as postscript engine in that it allows the use of minidrivers. A minidriver is a customization file or plug-in commonly utilized for special rendering functions or customized UI options. The customization file generated by the pscript5.dll function is a postscript printer description written as .ppd file.

One of the unique functions of the pscript5.dll file is the Handshake option. This option is often used to allow for communication between hardware. It is initialized in the Ports section of the Windows Control Panel. It should be noted that the handshaking option in the Windows PostScript driver is different from what Windows to communicate with the printer, which is set in the Ports section. The user is enabled to implement the handshake method through the Handshake option in the PostScript driver. This action does not affect the handshaking method in Windows. To avoid printer errors, the Windows handshaking option settings in the Control Panel must match the method set in the PostScript driver.

The pscript5.dll file is a common type of an inbox driver. Inbox drivers are shipped with all 32-bit Windows operating system and later versions. These types of drivers are also supplied by the printer manufacturer and distributed with their permission. All drivers shipped with Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are either Unidrv or PostScript minidrivers. Similarly, Independent hardware manufacturers (IHV) provide their own minidrivers used for their printers.
