Windows Process Description:

The Windows NT servers and workstations contain a security database called the Security Accounts Manager (SAM), a database which is basically part of and stored in a secured area of the Windows NT registry. It stores the users' passwords in a hashed format, thus provides some measure of security for the storage of passwords. The SAM database can be accessed by using the Windows NT API and by copying the registry files.

Both samlib.dll and the samsrv.dll module are used to read and write to the SAM database when an application uses the Windows NT API. The application, in turn, makes an API call in order to create, delete, change, or update a specified user or group, and server or workstation in the SAM database. Internally, Windows NT calls the samlib.dll application to complete the request, which, in turn, sends the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to the samdrv.dll file. It then transmits to the SAM database to make the requested changes or lookups. During this process, however, only the samsrv.dll file reads and writes to the SAM database.

When you set up a domain, the Windows NT operating system on each workstation and server has both the samsrv.dll file and the samlib.dll module. Nevertheless, only the samsrv.dll application on the PDC and the BDC is used to authenticate users to the Windows NT domain. When a user logs in to the domain, the user's client authenticates to the domain by sending an RPC to the samsrv.dll file on the PDC or on a BDC. But if you are attempting to manage the domain, the samlib.dll module must be able to contact a PDC, or you will be unable to manage the domain in any way.

The samlib.dll file is equipped with the SYSKEY utility in order to enhance its security against offline software cracking. It cannot be moved or copied while Windows is running.

The module samlib.dll is also present on servers running Windows Server 2003 that stores user accounts and security descriptors for users on the local computer.
