Windows Process Description:

A cross-platform, multimedia, free and open-source software library written in C is known by the computing term 'Simple DirectMedia Layer Dynamic Link Library' or the sdl.dll module. This file enables the program to create an abstraction of various platforms' graphics, sound, and input APIs. Program developers are then allowed to write a computer game or any other multimedia application by the sdl.dll file only once.

After finishing the desired work, the developer may run the application on many operating systems including Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, AmigaOS and its clone MorphOS. The sdl.dll module likewise manages video, events, digital audio, CD-ROM, sound, threads, shared object loading, networking and timers.

The Library was first released in early 1998 by Sam Lantinga, its known creator. Mr. Latinga developed the program while working for Loki Software. The idea dawned to him when he was porting a Windows application to Macintosh. He then used SDL to port Doom to BeOS making it compatible with other free libraries such as SMPEG and OpenAl.

The sdl.dll program has links with almost every programming language there is, from the popular C++, Perl, Python, and Pascal to the less known Euphoria and Pliant. Because of its being an open-source and licensed under the LGPL, SDL became a common choice for many multimedia applications. Despite of it simplicity, the DLL sdl.dll is complex in its functions.

The library is further divided into several subsystems, the Video which handles both surface functions and OpenGL, Audio, CD-ROM, Joystick and Timer subsystems. Aside from this basic, low-level support, there also are a few separate official libraries that associated with the sdl.dll file that provide some additional functionality. Among these is the standard library included in its official documentation.

The Simple DirectMedia Library is distributed under GNU LGPL version 2. This license allows the user free use of SDL in commercial programs provided the user links with it dynamic library.
