Windows Process Description:

The ssleay32.dll module is associated with the Open Secure Sockets Layer Toolkit from The OpenSSL Project. It is the communications protocol used for navigating to HTTPS addresses. It provides secure, encrypted communication between the Web browser and the Web server. Sites that request or display confidential information such as online banks, brokerages and shopping sites that accept credit cards also use it.

OpenSSL is based on the ssleay32.dll module developed by Eric A. Young and Tim J. Hudson. It uses the included full-strength general-purpose cryptography library.

The OpenSSL toolkit is registered under an Apache-style license, which means that you are free to get and use it for commercial and non-commercial purposes, subject to some simple license conditions. SSL uses a form of public key encryption, where the information is encoded by the browser using a publicly available key, and can only be decoded by someone who knows the corresponding private key.

The ssleay32.dll file deals with the development of a robust, commercial-grade, full-featured, and Open Source toolkit implementing the Secure Sockets Layer and Transport Layer Security protocols as well as a full-strength general purpose cryptography library. Worldwide communities of volunteers that use the Internet to communicate, plan, and develop the OpenSSL toolkit and its documentation manage the project.

The Secure Sockets Layer protocol (SSL) is designed to provide a secure channel between two communicating applications, in the case of HTTP between the browser, which is considered as the client, and the HTTPd server. It authenticates server and client identity. It operates by establishing an encoded communication path between the two applications, wrapping the entire application protocol inside the secure link, providing complete privacy for the entire transaction. In this way, security-related data can be effectively protected from unauthorized access while in transit.

The standard Off by One Setup kit copies the ssleay32.dll file to the installation directory and is included in the standard ZIP distribution. The OpenSSL files are not necessary for the normal functioning of the Off by One browser. The browser automatically detects and adjusts the presence or absence of the OpenSSL DLLs. You can manually select the SSL support style via the Options menu "SSL Support" option.
