Windows Process Description:

Manifests are XML files that accompany and describe side-by-side assemblies or isolated applications. The module sxs.dll is identified to be a part of the Windows operating system responsible in logging information linked with Windows manifest files. The manifest file is a compilation of data carrying meta-information regarding data archived as name or value pairs.

The sxs.dll application supports the manifest file to uniquely recognize the assembly through the assembly-identify element. The file sxs.dll carries data for binding and activation, such as COM classes, interfaces and type libraries that has traditionally been stored in the registry. If the assembly author desires to be versioned, the sxs.dll program specifies the files that would make up the assembly.

Side-by-side assemblies are not basically registered on the system but are available on the module sxs.dll compilation together with other assemblies on the system that specify dependencies in manifest files. The sxs.dll application allows the manifest files administrator to oversee side-by- side assembly versions after deployment.

Microsoft Corporation authored the development of the sxs.dll module to provide the dynamic link for manifest logging. This is the reason for the sxs.dll program to be also termed as Manifest Logging Dynamic Link Library. Microsoft intended that all executables, such as Setup programs which need access to protected areas of Windows, should require an Administrator. This is done by using a manifest file embedded or external that in turn refers to the sxs.dll program for commands linked to this access.

The sxs.dll file also describes a package and maps its location on disk to a chrome URL. The DLL sxs.dll in the chrome directory examines new application during starts-up to see what packages are installed. This means that the entire user needs to do to install the new package is check for compatibility of the new manifest file with the existing one in the sxs.dll application; else Windows operation will be hampered. The operating system failure to start at times is because of these incompatibilities.
