Windows Process Description:
The file tfswshx.dll is the Browser Helper Object (BHO) also known as Drive Letter Access Component or Direct Access Component. It was originally developed by Veritas Software, Inc. and was later sold to Sonic Solutions in 2002. The tfswshx.dll comes as a custom OEM version pre-installed or prepared for installation with most branded drives such as Sony, HP, IBM, etc.
The DLL tfswshx.dll is a packet writing application that uses optical disc recording technology. It allows writeable CD and DVD media to be used in a similar manner to a floppy disk. Packet writing uses a drive letter on Windows while a mounted files system on Linux, Unix, or Mac OS. It uses the Universal Disk Format (UDF) file system in versions 1.5 or later.
After formatting the optical media, the tfswshx.dll application writes the data in small packets which all modern CD and DVD recording drives do. This process makes it possible to save files on to the optical media, copy them separately as well as change, rename or delete them. Without the tfswshx.dll module, these optical media have to be written in one big block such as Disc-at-Once, Track-at-Once, at Session-at-Once which do not normally support sectors.
Most OEM versions to which the program tfswshx.dll is part of, supports only Windows 2000 and Windows XP. However, the DLL itself runs on older versions of Windows like Windows 98/SE, Windows Me as well as Windows NT 4.0. Windows XP is the first operating system to support DVD-RAM. While Windows Vista does not support the Drive Letter Access technology, it is the first operating system to support full UDF functionality, meaning read and write operations.
The tfswshx.dll application is known to cause stop errors on Windows Server 2003 and can also lock up a Windows XP system when RW media is inserted. Whatever the case maybe, the errors might have been caused by improper installation of the application. The solution is to uninstall the program tfswshx.dll then restart the operating system.
