The module thundersafe.dll is a component of the ThunderSafe encryption software. ASCIT and runs on Windows 95 / 98 and Windows NT developed ThunderSafe. The software was not updated to support Windows XP and searching for newer versions would only lead to dead links. When the ASCIT.com website was still online, a link was available where users could download the ThunderSafe version 2.00a encryption software. Although there is an ASCIT.org website, that offers application development as one of its services, there is nothing on the site that claims ownership or hints of developing the ThunderSafe software.

ASCIT.com and other linked download sites claim that the ThunderSafe software featured an encryption technology that allowed a user to create standalone executable encrypted files. The secured files can then be stored on a PC or a Local Area Network that has no ThunderSafe software installed. It can also be sent safely thru the Internet as E-mail attachments. The recipients of the executable encrypted file would then be able to view the content of the file without the need of having a ThunderSafe application installed. In order to access the secured data or view the content of the file, the recipient must have the correct password. The encryption engine that ThunderSafe used had the 448 bit Blowfish encryption algorithm. ThunderSafe, ASCIT claims, provides easy access to secure email and data communication.

If ASCIT was the developer of the ThunderSafe encryption software, the thundersafe.dll module had a different developer, Winix Sweden, a software developer in the Scandinavian market specializing in software applications for computer security and forensics. It has remained discreet for more than a decade of "behind the scenes" experience in developing and supporting highly specialized security software. As of late Winix Sweden has teamed up with Authentex Software Corporation.

The thundersafe.dll file is still readily available from download sites even though one can rarely find an active download link for the main application. Since the module functions as the shell extension of the encryption software, the file thundersafe.dll is found together with the rest of the executable files in the main directory usually at c: / Program Files / ThunderSafe /.
