Windows Process Description:

The trkwks.dll module is described as Microsoft's Distributed Link Tracking Client Service. It is known for maintaining links in the file system within a computer or across computers in a network domain. This file system is known as NTFS or new technology file system. NTFS is a more reliable and secured file system for storing, organizing, and accessing computer files on the hard drive.

Such task of the trkwks.dll module allows shell shortcuts and object linking and embedding (OLE) links to continue to work after the target file is renamed or removed. The shell shortcuts refer to the ones located in the Desktop, Favorites, Start Menu, and Recent folders. While the OLE links refers to application links like Excel spreadsheet stored within a Word document.

Windows uses the distributed link tracking (DLT) to find a file that has been renamed, moved to another volume on the same computer, or moved to a different computer. It also locates the link when the user accesses a link that was moved. Furthermore, it can locate moved files even if the user is unaware of its movement.

The trkwks.dll module is closely related to the Distributed Link Tracking Server Service. The server service runs exclusively on Windows Server-based domain controllers. It provides service to help the trkwks.dll application. On the other hand, the file trkwks.dll provides the server service with information about file links. These links are stored by the server service in the Active Directory. Moreover, the trkwks.dll application may inquire the server service for information when a shell shortcut or OLE link cannot be solved. In such case, the application trkwks.dll prompts the server service to update links every thirty days. The server service, on the other hand, searches objects that have not been updated in ninety days.

In Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Server 2003, the trkwks.dll application is configured to start automatically at startup. In contrast, the server service is disabled by default on Windows Server 2003 or .NET platform. However, it can be configured to start automatically when the application dcpromo.exe is used to promote a server to a domain. When the server service is disabled by default, the trkwks.dll application does not try to use it. But if a user wants to take advantage of the working relationship between the trkwks.dll application and server service, the Allow Distributed Link Tracking Clients to Use Domain Resources policy setting needs to be enabled. This policy setting is located in the Group Policy's Computer Configuration/ Administrative Templates/ System connection.
