Windows Process Description:

The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology is designed to perform service and device discovery and control via standards-based and driverless protocol mechanisms.

On Windows XP, there are two sets of UPnP functionality: the UPnP host service and the SSDP service. The DLL that provides the UPnP host service functionality is the upnphost.dll module. This service is exclusively used only used if when you're hosting an UPnP device. On the other hand, The SSDP service permits the discovery of attached UPnP network devices. Without it, you cannot discover UPnP devices.

The upnphost.dll module automatically configures network addressing, announces the presence of the UPnP device on the network subnet, and permits the exchange of devices and service descriptions. This module allows the host computer to act as the control point for the UPnP device with a notification on the taskbar that a new device has been added to the network and is available.

On Windows CE, the API of the upnphost.dll module handles the specific steps of discovery, description, control, and eventing of UPnP device hosting services. Applications that use this API usually respond to search requests issued by the control point, parse SOAP and HTTP control commands, and return the responses to the same control point, and respond to control requests from the control point. The module upnphost.dll API submits events to remote subscribers; publish information about the device, its services, and the nested devices on the network;, and responds to device queries on the network.

If the upnphost.dll module is selected in the platform, the system registry can use the UPnP device hosting services. When this happens, automatically set the registry keys.
