Windows Process Description:

The DLL uxtheme.dll is a skinning engine that installs a system wide hook to intercept paint calls and injects skin data. Microsoft bundled this DLL on Windows XP so that it can apply msstyles. The application svchost.exe is required to run in order to manage the skin.

Skinning is a way of customizing a computer screen to desired styles or colors. However, Windows XP and Windows Vista only support this application. If a Windows user desires to add more color to a computer screen, Windows XP maybe patched to uxtheme.dll module to apply Microsoft msstyle format. The msstyle format is the skin program that the default Windows XP theme is in.

Some enterprising individual try to sell programs patching the uxtheme.dll engine to Windows XP users. However, Microsoft advises users not to be fooled by these people. The file uxtheme.dll is already a component that comes with Windows XP and Vista operating systems.

Oftentimes, MSStyle is referred to as "Style XP themes". Style XP is one of those programs that break limited style and color to computer screens via the uxtheme.dll module. The advantage that comes with msstyles running via this DLL is because the included skin (Luna) uses it. The skinning engine of uxtheme.dll and msstyle had a high degree of compatibility.

Microsoft discourages Windows users to buy downloadable programs online for patches to the uxtheme.dll engine. Most of these patches are not compatible with the users' operating system. This may manifest when updating Windows XP in any significant way. The user will likely to find either unable to boot or the skins fail to work anymore. One other problem is that the user may have violated the Microsoft EULA by modifying the Microsoft's Dynamic Link Library's pack.
