The Visual Basic 4.0 programming language is a 32-bit software development kit tailored for Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51. Major features that were being heralded in Visual Basic 4.0 were OLE automation objects and Data Access features implemented by the vbdb32.dll module and both not available in previous versions of the Visual Basic language. It is used across all Microsoft software including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
The Visual Basic for Applications DLL, or the vba2.dll file, is the main component of Visual Basic. It is an object-oriented interface in the Visual Basic 4.0 when it sends out a database applications programming interface call. This object-oriented interface is labeled the data access o(DAO). The DAO is a suite of OLE Automation objects for data access that Visual Basic uses and is enclosed in the dao2516.dll file and then passed to the Jet engine or the msajt200.dll file. The Jet engine determines the type of database to be opened and uses the vbdb32.dll module for the needed functions and classes.
The Microsoft Jet Engine was built to provide the database connectivity aspects for Visual Basic. For the Visual Basic 4.0, which uses the 32 bit platform, and for the vbdb32.dll module, the Microsoft Jet Engine version 3.0 is needed. The vb32.dll file is a main library that is used by the Jet Engine. Various other dynamic link libraries are included with Visual Basic that is mostly used for external database and ODBC support.

* ability to open and close the database
